Work Your Way to a Simpler Life

by Arthur A. Hawkins II

Start your own business

David slew Goliath! He made work simple. Why else would multinational conglomerates outsource, spin off divisions, downsize, restructure, use the Web and technology. . .?

Giants, elephants and 800-pound gorillas want to avoid the same fate and realize that to succeed in the 21st century they must be lean and mean. They now see the benefits in simplifying the way they work. Fortunately, it’s easier for you. Just do it!

Here are 15 ways to make work simple:

  1. Think simple! If you want to attract business, a job or a raise and promotion let the right people and companies know you exist (yes, this means you must know who the right people and companies are and the best ways to contact and persuade them). Think about it

  2. Determine what is really important for you, your family, your job / your business, education, etc. Relax and listen to your inner voice

  3. Use your common sense. Does what you are doing make sense? What can you do to make things easier? Is there a better way?

  4. Take responsibility. Delegating and outsourcing are a necessity today, but stop unnecessarily passing the buck to employees, assistants, consultants, committees and even loved ones

  5. Use your time wisely. Gain efficiency and effectiveness by becoming an accomplished time manager

  6. Organize your work, schedule, life. . . Avoid spending the time, effort and money necessary to "find" things, places and people. And stop wasting time wondering what to do next. Create relevant “to do” lists. Simplify work – put order in your court

  7. Get comfortable. Think ergonomic. Why sit in an uncomfortable chair, subject yourself to poor lighting (especially at small computer monitors with poor resolution), type on a cramped keyboard, etc.? Raise your satisfaction and productivity and reduce things like back pain, eye strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.

  8. Eliminate travel headaches and stress. Give yourself time to comfortably get to your destination. Consider all your travel options – car, train, bus, car pool, walking, bike, airplane, boat and work at home. Evaluate different routes to get you there. Limit rush hour heavy traffic travel. It’s stressful!

  9. Travel less. Organize your errands and trips. Reduce or completely eliminate the need to commute (to and from work, meetings, conferences) – telecommute, delivery service, e-meetings, video conferences, e-mail, the Internet, etc.

Save time. Surf the Internet faster now!

  10. Use technology to your advantage – computers, e-mail, the Internet, phones, faxes, copiers, PDAs, etc. (tech freebies can add value). Gain productivity. And don't forget about the learning curve.

  11. Socialize (family, friends, associates, clients, etc.). Life is more than just work. Remember more deals take place in social settings (golf courses, lunch, charitable events, volunteer work, etc.) than in the boardroom

  12. Get up and at 'em! Get active. Gain energy. Exercise regularly. Volunteer. Give back to society. Lift your mood

  13. Be frugal. Become less materialistic. Don’t let money and things define you. Why not start with your wardrobe? Start wearing comfortable clothes. Dressing down is fashionable. Although more traditional “business” wear is making a come back of late. But in any case, do you really need expensive designer clothes? Fashion outlets and discount stores have what you need at reasonable prices and don’t forget about in-store brands and stuff you already have (Save, Save, Save)

  14. Brown bag it. Eat your own cooking. Save money by using Frugal Food Formula. Yes, you can still eat with your coworkers.

  15. Shop smart. Plan ahead. Buy on need. Avoid impulse purchases. Compare prices. Negotiate. Get the most bang for your buck. But don’t get bogged down buying. Make purchasing and procurement the art of the deal.

Working simple is a natural extension of living the simple life. Work becomes fun and stress is greatly reduced. You also become more efficient and effective and have more time to enjoy life.

But if you find your job or business too stressful or are burning out from it consider getting another job, starting your own business or taking some time off. Life is too short. . .

Your goal is to work smarter not harder. Use the 15 steps above to achieve more. Do more with less effort.

That’s right, make work simple. Even single income households can thrive in the 21st century by making work and life simple. In fact, they may be better off than most dual income "consuming" households.

Simplify the way you work and live today and enjoy the rewards (Free Online Budgeting System). Just do it!
